Who is Asifa Bhutto Zardari?
Born on Feb 3, 1993, Asifa is the youngest daughter of late Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan. Her father, Asif Ali Zardari, is the former President of Pakistan. She got her Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Sociology from the prestigious Oxford Brookes University, UK and her Masters in Global Health and Development from the University College, London.
She is also living with Vitiligo
This beautiful and full of life young lady, the Brand Ambassador of anti-polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan, is living with vitiligo. The white vitiligo lesions are clearly visible on her face.
As a public health champion, she visits schools and hospitals; attends mass public gathering and meets local and global officials and dignitaries. She is determined to make Pakistan a ‘Polio-free’ country.
By listening to her words and seeing her huge public interactions, it is quite clear that she has accepted vitiligo as a part of her life and not as some sort of obstacle.
Her family is among the richest in Pakistan and undoubtedly, she can afford any sort of treatment to cure vitiligo if any such ‘magical’ treatment exists. The medical world also states that there is no ‘cure’ of vitiligo as of now. However, there any multiple ways to manage (control) it and live a better life.
Hence, don’t run behind any sort of ‘miraculous’ treatment which boast to remove the white lesions from your skin once forever. Such a desperate attempt can cause serious side effects to your skin and the whole body. Just focus on your strengths, stay positive and enjoy this beautiful gift from the God called life to the fullest.
A few words about Vitiligo and its management
Vitiligo, also known as leucoderma, refers to loss of skin pigment. It results in skin depigmentation in the form of white patches on various parts of the body. Vitiligo is non contagious and non fatal in nature. It doesn’t spread by physical touch or living together or sharing personal stuffs. In short, it just affects the physical appearance of a person without posing any serious threats to the person or the people around.
In medical terms, the melanocytes are the pigment (color) producing skin cells. These melanocytes are damaged (or destroyed) due to an autoimmune response to develop vitiligo. The exact cause for autoimmunity is not known, so as the cure. However, various factors that can contribute towards autoimmunity are:
- Poor gut health (lack of healthy gut bacteria, poor digestion, chronic constipation, poor liver health)
- Severe nutritional deficiency
- Chronic stress
- Hereditary (faulty genes)
- Skin injury
- Infection (such as strep throat)
- Overload of body toxins
- Faulty diet and lifestyle
- Over consumption of alcohol
- Too much consumption of steroids and antibiotics
Considering the lifelong nature of vitiligo, many people rely on alternative medicines to avoid the possible side effects of conventional pharma drugs.
In my opinion, it needs a holistic healing approach to manage vitiligo symptoms, that includes:
- Healthy diet (reduced intake of dairy, gluten, nightshades and processed foods. More intake of green vegetables, fruits and whole foods)
- Positive lifestyle (proper sleep, fixed meal timings, spending time with family and friends)
- Dietary supplements like vitamin D, fish oil (for omega 3 fats), vitamin B12, zinc, selenium, probiotics, digestive enzymes, etc.
- Stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation, regular exercise, jogging, etc.
- Natural herbs such as turmeric (curcumin), milk thistle, virgin coconut oil, neem, etc.
To sum up, beauty is skin deep. Beauty lies in accepting yourself as you are with all the love and gratitude towards the almighty. When you embrace yourself wholeheartedly, the people around would also love and accept you for what you are!
